Disciple Bible Study

First UMC will again offer Disciple Bible study beginning in early September. Disciple study groups are groups of about twelve persons who meet weekly to study God’s word. These studies are for anyone interested in in-depth Bible study, from those who have never studied the Bible before to those who have studied the Scriptures more extensively. Study groups meet weekly for about 2-1/2 hours. Group members view a 10-minute video presented by experienced preachers, scholars, or professors with demonstrated ability to communicate their knowledge of Scripture. Group members then discuss the video and participate in discussions or exercises, drawing from their readings during the week.

All Disciple sessions are led by one or more experienced laypersons. Learning materials consist of videos and student workbooks. Students spend about 30 minutes each day, six days each week, reading the Bible and other assigned material.

We are planning to offer two Disciple studies this year:

Disciple I – Becoming Disciples through Bible Study: This 34-week study covers the entire Bible. Students read almost 70% of the Bible during this study. This course lays the foundation for the other courses and is a prerequisite for participation in those studies.

Disciple IV – Under the Tree of Life: This 32-week study focuses on the Writings of the Old Testament (Ruth, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Ester, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, and Daniel) and the New Testament (John; 1, 2, and 3 John; James; Jude; and Revelation).

Disciple Registration will begin July 28, and orientation will likely take place the week of August 25. Interested? If you want to learn more, contact Dave Meixner (301-498-1728, themeixners@comcast.net), David Myers (myers2263@comcast.net), or Mary Constable (Mconstablem@comcast.net).
