FUCML Geocaching Outting

Let’s go geocaching!

The FUCML Fellowship Team will be hosting a geocaching outing on Saturday, 21 September.  We will meet at the church at 9 AM and depart from there for a few hours of geocaching fun.

What is geocaching?  Essentially, it is a high-tech scavenger hunt using GPS receivers or smart phones to search for hidden containers in a variety of locations.  When you find the geocache (or just cache), you sign the logbook to show you were there.  Many caches also contain “swag” (items for trade).  You can see an introductory video and learn more at http://www.geocaching.com/guide/default.aspx.

What should I wear?  I would plan to wear comfortable shoes that you won’t mind walking  some distance (including off trail) in and wear long pants for protection against thorns, poison ivy and such.

What should I bring?  I recommend water and maybe some sort of snack.  If you have a handheld GPS unit, of course bring that.  If you want to use a smartphone, you will probably want to sign up at geocaching.com and install one of the geocaching apps first.  There are various options depending on what kind of phone you have (iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry).   Also, if you want to get into the spirit of caching and trade “swag”, you should plan to bring a few trade items with you.  You might have stuff around the house you could use or you might visit the dollar store before our outing.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dave Self at (301) 395-7472.  If you are interested, but simply can’t go on the 21st, Dave would be happy to meet up with you at another time to take you caching.
