We believe all Christians are called to ministry (although only some are called to be pastors). There are many opportunities for ministry at First UMC. There are groups for men, women, youth, and children with Sunday school classes for all ages. There are also small groups that meet for fellowship and support. A number of church members have participated in the “Walk to Emmaus” program. The “Walk to Emmaus” is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program’s approach seriously considers the model of Christ’s servant hood and encourages Christ’s disciples to act in ways appropriate to being “a servant of all” and they meet regularly to continue their walk. First UMC also offers Disciple Bible courses for those hungering for the Word of God.  The Disciple Bible Study program is designed to develop strong local churches through the in-depth study of Scripture.

An extremely critical ministry at First Church is our Prayer Ministry which includes a prayer chain via telephone and email to pray for those in need, weekly prayer gatherings, and a prayer team that assists those in need of prayer during Sunday services and as needed throughout the week. We encourage prayer and have an active prayer team that can be accessed by calling or emailing the church office at 301-725-3093 or

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” – (1 Peter 4:10)
