Mission Trip to Laurel MS, July 14-22

Reprinted from June 2006 Revelations

“How can we help?” is a question many churches across the country have asked after seeing the disturbing images of destruction and trauma following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This summer, we at First UMC have a unique opportunity to help with the recovery effort.

Working with West Laurel UMC, Laurel, MS, many of our volunteers will be helping with Camp Noah. Camp Noah is a week-long, faith-based day camp offered for elementary-age children in grades K-6 who have experienced disaster. It is staffed by trained camp counselors and is supported by a local mental health professional. Camp Noah combines disaster recovery support for children with fun-filled recreation to form a unique and healing experience.

The camp curriculum is based on the Old Testament story of Noah and the flood. Children experiencing a hurricane have experienced the common phases of disaster and grief. Hearing the story of Noah and comparing themselves to it gives the children the opportunity to talk about the various phases and emotions of their own disaster experience. Camp Noah is designed specifically for children and is offered at no cost to families in disaster-affected areas through the generous commitment and support of ecumenical, community, and regional partners.

While one team of our folks is helping present Camp Noah, another team will be working at community work sites, helping repair the damage still evident months later.

How can I help? Glad you asked. Here are some ways you can help.

Travel to Laurel, Mississippi, as part of the mission team. At least 20 members of our First UMC family are planning to make the trip.

Provide financial support. Those persons making the trip are responsible for raising at least $200 to cover expenses, in addition to giving up a week of vacation. The actual cost of the trip, including the training for Camp Hope, is approaching $10,000. If no one has asked you personally for your support, you can still contribute. Make your check out to First UMC and write “Mission to Laurel, MS” on the bottom of your check or on your envelope.

Pray for the safety of those who are serving as Christ's hands and feet during the actual mission trip, the generosity of those who are called to contribute financially, and the presence and protection of the Holy Spirit for those making the trip, those living in Laurel, MS, and those who are “holding down the fort” at home. — Ed.
