First United Methodist Church—Our Purpose: As believers in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and the Bible as the inspired word of God, we 1) glorify God through worship, 2) build strong relationships in the church family, 3) grow in the knowledge of the truth as revealed through Jesus Christ, 4) serve people as a reflection of the love of Jesus Christ, and 5) spread the Good News of the Gospel so that others may come to salvation through grace.

Thoughts from Your Pastor
“God’s Google”
It’s something I take for granted. I’m talking about Google. Think back to fifteen years ago (that would be 1997). Who would have ever thought back then that if you had a question about anything (getting directions, facts and trivia, instructions, news, etc.) that you could type your topic into a search engine like Google and find any information in the world on your topic in just mere seconds? If you have a smart phone, you can do all this within the palm of your hand from wherever you are. Worldwide information right at our fingertips… That’s simply astounding!
And yet information never equates to wisdom. Information is a list of facts. Wisdom is knowing what to do with the facts we have. For example, if I’m looking for a job, I can have a listing of job openings pretty quickly and easily. But which job do I choose? Which one would be the best opportunity? Which one would be the best use of my gifts and talents? Which job holds the best prospects for my future? No search engine in the world could answer those questions.
The good news is that the Holy Spirit is the source of all the wisdom we need! The Apostle Paul writes,
“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us… The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for,
“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”
But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:10-12, 15)
If you have given yourself to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and have received him into your life, then the Holy Spirit dwells in you, too. Having the Holy Spirit is like having the inside scoop on the will and mind of God. The Holy Spirit’s job is to teach us everything that Jesus has taught us in order to bring us fully into the life of God (see John 14:26).
Listening for the Spirit within you happens when we read Scripture, pray, and watch for God’s activity around us. But the common thread that weaves it all together is just intentionally listening and watching for God. Listen for God. Wait for God’s Spirit to teach and prompt you. Then you will have the wisdom that created the universe. You will have, as the Scripture says above, the very mind of Christ.

Yours in Christ’s Love and Service,
Pastor Chris

Calling all Youth of First UMC (Grades 6-12) – ROCK 2013 (January 11-13) in Ocean City is fast approaching. This year’s theme is “Transformed from the Inside Out” and the theme verse is Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.” The speaker will be Reggie Dabbs and the Praise & Worship will be led by Jeff Deyo and Urban Street Level. There will also be a Mass Choir again which each youth can participate in. There are rehearsals each month at the Conference Center leading up to ROCK. The registration has opened and we need to secure our spot. The cost for attending ROCK 2013 is $125. This will include your ticket to ROCK in the Main Hall, a ROCK t-shirt and two nights lodging, as well as breakfast both Saturday and Sunday. Each youth will still to bring money for other meals and incidentals. To reserve your spot, please contact Blairlee Owens at (301) 725-6722 or blairleeowens@comcast.net and give a $25 deposit to Blairlee by Sunday, September 30. The tickets will be purchased at that time. Full payment needs to be received by January 1.

First United Methodist Church is looking to defend it’s Side by Side Kickball Tournament Trophy on Saturday, October 6 at McCullough Field. The tournament is from 8:30am-2:30pm. The cost of a team is $250, so we are looking for 10 players who would each pay $25 to be a part of our winning team. We have 8 players and could use a few more, which would also lower the per person cost. We also welcome donations. All of the proceeds of the tournament will go to Side by Side. If you are interested in playing, please contact Blairlee Owens by Sunday, September 30 at (301) 725-6722 or blairleeowens@comcast.net.

Ministry News
Update and reminder
to nominate a veteran(s) for the
Stained Glass Window Honoring Veterans

The organizing committee for the veteran’s stained glass window project has collected donations for the window sufficient to cover all costs of the window, plaque, book of remembrance and stand for the book.

We originally requested donations not exceed $50.00 per nomination. While not necessary, if you wish to make a donation, make a check out to First United Methodist Church and indicate Veteran’s Stained Glass Window in the memo line. Excess funds will be given to the Memorial Committee for maintenance and new names to be added to the plaque or for an additional plaque.

Instructions and the nomination template are available in the
Narthex or any committee member. You may submit the
nomination electronically or as a hand written document. We
now offer the option for you to provide a picture of the person
being honored, which will be added to the back of the one page
narrative of the person’s service.

DEADLINE: To allow all material to be processed and the draft provided each nominator for review, we request you provide the information ASAP so a complete package is available for the dedication date. However, there is no actual deadline because names will be accepted after the dedication and into the future.

Dedication will be on the Sunday prior to Veteran’s Day this fall (November 11).

For additional information contact any committee member: Russ Geis, Stephan Stankewich or Richard Reynnells
